Off to Zeeland! We didn't know exactly where Old Bart (my Grandfather)
grew up, but Middleburg is the capital of Zeeland, and the book said
there was a museum with the history of the area. Of course it was closed
undergoing renovations (sounded like we were back in Germany for a bit!)
- but the old Abbey had a great display on its history, and since it has
been the seat of local government for the past 500 years, it was also a
good grounding in the history of the area.
Despite being a small country, we did choose the opposite side for our
one day trip - took about 2 1/2 hours each way. It was worth it though,
lots of old buildings. I wish we'd had more time there.
There was a storyteller in the square outside the abbey, telling
children's stories by the look of the audience. It's a pity we didn't
understand a word he was saying :( He seemed quite entertaining.
We had planned to meet up with Peter for dinner, but couldn't get in
contact (left messages on the answering machine, but no response), so we
wound up eating at a nice vegetarian restaurant instead. The house cat
came and sat on our laps while we were waiting for our food - its name
translates as 'get off the table'!
