Wandered through a used book sale at a church just down the road. We'd
looked at it before, but not been sure if we'd be around long, so
carrying more weight would have been bad. Anyway, most of the books were
free this day because it was the last day of the sale. We collected
about 20 books for the grand total of 40p (one book was only half price
- a book on card games which we've played a few of since!) We'll leave
most of them in the hostel for other people to read.
Had more of those yummy pasties for lunch, and watched a piano player
busking. It's quite impressive dragging a real upright piano into the
middle of town to busk!
This weekend was an early music festival, and we found a bunch of morris
dancing groups performing in a square. We watched them for hours,
despite the competition of a young symphonic band who set up only 20
metres away! The morris dancing groups survived by joining forces - the
musicians from all the groups combined to play with each other. It was
impressive watching 4 people dance to a band of 20! One violinist in
particular was great - he would play along with anything, picking it up
as they went. He even aped the band at times, copying what they'd just
played, even picking up their... um... interesting... tuning perfectly.
We joined in with one of the stick-whacking dances, and it
started to rain while we were dancing, so we ran off as soon as
that dance finished. I think everyone else did the same
(including the morris dancers).
