Waited at the hostel all morning for the promised phone call, and
finally called at 1pm. I was very annoyed by that stage, and it was a
rather agro phone call. Yet again we'd been promised stuff, and bad
communication within Select had left us sitting around waiting.
I'd managed to get an old version of Linux (Debian Potato) installed on
the laptop, and needed a net connection to upgrade it. We went out to
Tony's so I could use his ADSL. While I did computer stuff, Kate had a
tarot reading done! Tony is not only an accomplished musician (he showed
us his studio, and played CDs of a couple of pieces of his work), but he
does hypnotism and psychic readings. He works with a local dentist
hypnotising patients who are terrified of injections.
Some very interesting things came up in the tarot reading. He could tell
that Kate had a bad knee when she was a kid, and that she had a bad
back. He also warned us that we would probably buy a light bag for
something, and have it stolen in Italy. We're being careful about light
bags now (he did know we were planning to go to Italy before hand, so
that bit doesn't count).
He and his fiancee are moving to Sydney some time in the not too distant
future, so we're hoping to stay in touch.
Kate left her bag behind when we left (not light coloured though).
Went on one of the 4 different ghost walks available in York. As with
all of them (says the guidebook) it was high on atmosphere and low on
content. There were over 60 of us in the group! There were some sad
stories, and quite a few good jokes. The guide had a loud voice and a
good theatrical presence.
We had been offered a 'mobile home' in a caravan park outside Hull - in
the middle of nowhere. Kate would have had to catch a Taxi in to work in
the mornings, and I would have been sitting there the whole time.
Weekend travel would have been very difficult (2 hours to the nearest
train hub - York or Doncaster). We met George, a South African who may
have been sharing the mobile home with us - at least Kate did. He was
living in the same hostel! We were quite happy to live with him, but not
so happy about the work situtation.
